Dr. Carlisle holds joint appointments in the University of Michigan's Educational Studies program and the University's Communicative Disorders clinic, where she conducts research on language development as it affects achievement in reading and writing, with a special interest in children for whom language learning presents unusual challenges. She earned her B.A. in English from Vassar College and a Ph.D. in Special Education (with a specialization in Learning Disabilities) from the University of Connecticut. Dr. Carlisle's professional resume includes time spent as a teacher and administrator in elementary and high schools in both New York and Connecticut; prior to joining the Michigan faculty in 2000, she spent 13 years on the faculty of Northwestern University.
Aside from her professorial and administrative duties, Dr. Carlisle currently serves on the editorial boards of several major professional journals, including Learning Disabilities Quarterly and Writing and Reading: An Interdisciplinary Journal, and is co-editor with her husband, Dr. Addison Stone, of Learning Disabilities Research and Practice.
Dr. Carlisle is the recipient of a variety of grants and awards for her work in the field of special education and learning disabilities. She has numerous educational materials and book chapters to her name, and has published articles in many of the leading journals of her field.
CIERA wishes to welcome Joanne Carlisle to her new position at the center. We look forward to her leadership as we enter our fifth year of activity, helping educators teach every child to read.
